Fake Dad

Fake Dad

Fake Dad is the Brooklyn-based musical project of Andrea de Varona and Josh Ford, who “want you to know that everything is going to be okay.” And although this mantra has been on their Facebook page since well before we were all sheltering in place, it feels especially nice to hear right now. In this homestyle Buzzsession, Fake Dad further highlights the stellar vocal harmonies and goofy, calm camaraderie that already characterized their music.

In their cover of The Postal Service’s optimistic 2003 single, “Such Great Heights,” they slow it down and ride the vibes. The way de Varona draws out Ben Gibbard’s lyrics (“…and we’ll stayyyyy…”) reflects the way time seems to stretch like taffy when all you see for days is your own bedroom, kitchen, and cat. Appropriately, bed is also where the performance takes place, framed by images of the sleepy action still taking place outside every day: cars driving, leaves and flowers fluttering in the breeze, clouds passing, and, in a subtle shout-out to The Wild Honey Pie’s mascot, bees buzzing. Meanwhile, this special rendition of their own song, “Can U B My Home?” provides an adorable portrait of quarantine loopiness as shared with someone you love, including outtakes from a modeling session on the stairs, an outdoor dance break, and cameos from Animal Crossing, their pet cat, and a plush doll of Jake the Dog.
