A swanky mid-century modern couch with satin gold pillows, plants in abundance is a duly luxe landscape for our Buzzsession with singer-songwriter Dana McCoy. Joining us from Maryland, she ushers us in with an infectious smile before beginning a lo-fi rendition of her track “Broken Boy.” Clean production allows spry synths and a smooth bassline to drive the track forward while her incredible vocals shine with ease. Being alone in isolation takes on a new meaning from atop her living room throne, “broken boy” no longer weighing her down. Make no mistake, she’s thriving on her own and her message is clear: “I don’t wanna be involved.”
McCoy then moves into a cover of “Fall,” an early single from R&B duo Chloe x Halle. While her raw talent is unquestionable, it’s the cinematic quality of her presence that commands attention in this soulful cover. Against a dynamic piano arrangement, her expressive vocals transform her living room into a colorful sanctuary as she sings with reverence for the metaphorical rain that perpetually hangs over us. Rather than dwelling on gray skies, she simply rejoices, “I’ll shower in shimmers of gold.” She chooses hope, and for now, that is enough.
